The way you design your scrapbook page
determines how the viewers’ eyes move through
your layout. You can use compositional movement
to lead the way to important elements on your
page and to emphasize the message you want to
communicate.
Take a look at the visual triangle of the jewels
on Janice Badger’s page, Advice Taken. The eyes
shift between the jewel groups because of the
same shapes and colors. The dark colored swirl
leads your eyes to her face on the photo and the
subtle implicit line from the top to the bottom
of the page leads the eyes through her son in
the photograph.

Editor's
note:
Remember
the January issue where we talked about
Gestalt; the brain compulsively connects
similar elements together, which is known as
grouping, or Gestalt.

Advice Taken by Janice
Badger. Supplies: Spiced Jewel kit by Anna Aspnes (designerdigitals.com),
Font: Casmira.
Journaling:
When I had Matthew, everyone
kept telling me "sleep when the baby
sleeps". But with the excitement over a
first child and my somewhat stubborn nature,
I tended to ignore that advice. When Jeremy
was born, I had a newborn and a toddler,
which limited my options. But those first
few weeks, when we had visitors, I was
perfectly willing to be a bad hostess and
sleep when I could, knowing that my visitors
could (and would) keep an eye on Matthew
while Jeremy and I were sleeping. - Janice,
38 years - Jeremy, 11 days - April 13, 2004
On the layout Water World by Debbie Sherman,
the orange outline of the large paisley
shape leads the eyes smoothly through the
photo and back around the whole page. The
eyes also jump between the similar cut out
shapes on each side of the photo.

Design
note:
I
cut out the patterns and then raised them,
making them 3 dimensional. I used the
patterned paper to frame the photo and give
it motion. The techniques used here are
paper piecing, outlining paper pieces with
Stickles. I added Diamond Glaze to give it
a wet look and make it look like water
splashes.

Water World by Debbie
Sherman. Supplies:
Paper: Die Cuts With a View, Glitter glue:
Ranger, Letter stickers: EK Success, Other:
Judikins’ Diamond Glaze.
Journaling:
The journaling is on the back of the layout
and it reads “The girls had so much fun at
Water World. We spent the night in Denver
and went swimming the night before so they
got plenty of water fun! They slept all the
way home. We wore them out!”
When you look at Jessica Salber’s page Funny
Face, the dark vertical line leads your eyes
towards the journaling and your eyes jump
from the first part of the title to the
second part. Also notice the visual triangle
made by the white flower, journaling strips
and swirl.

Design
note:
I think this layout has a
strong movement throughout. The big flower
with the buttons is the focal point of the
layout, then the title leads your eye across
the page. The white swirl leads your eye
through the photos, then the "I love you"
title leads your eye back across. The "love"
chipboard point downwards directs your eye
to the journaling. Layout was inspired by
the song "Funny Face, I love you".

Funny Face, I love you by
Jessica Salber. Supplies:
Paper: Cherry Arte, Cardstock: Bazzill
Basics Paper, Chipboard: Cherry Arte, Heidi
Swapp, Paper frills: Doodlebug Design,
Other: ribbon, buttons.
Journaling:
When the road I walk seems all uphill - And
the colors in my rainbow turn blue - You
kiss the tears away - You make goofy smiles
at me and I say - Funny Face I love you -
Funny Face I need you
