Overhaul Alley

 Christa Parker

Many may know that this column is written well in advance to its appearance in the magazine. I may be looking out the window at three feet of snow, thinking that one more “snow day” will put me over the edge when I need to write an article about “spring”. Such is the case this month. Where is my inspiration, when brown slush covers the ground, the cold chills to the bone and the children have been in the house one day too many?

Past memories tell me that the brown will turn to green and from death will come life. I will take off the storm windows, and smell that fresh spring air and flowers will push their blooms through the ground. Spring will come… sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but it always comes just in time to lift us up and give us a new beginning. It comes just in time to give a new look to our world. Spring brings new inspiration where there was none.

Check out the spring inspiring alterations below. Take a moment and think about what “spring” will inspire in you.

Design note: I use this bucket for scrap trash on my desk while doing a page, it only holds papers. I had so much fun pulling out old ribbons, and flowers in every style and format to play with. Mixing and matching, and some items I have had forever were finally used! I used the Cropadile to make holes to allow the brads at the top.

Spring Pail by Michelle Boeckermann. Supplies: Pail: Cosmo Cricket, Paper, Die Cut Words: Fancy Pants, Flowers: Prima, Daisy D's, Kelly Pinnacci, Heidi Swapp, Deluxe Designs, Queen and Co., Buttons: Daisy D's, Anna Griffin, My Mind's Eye, Rub-Ons: Sassafrass Lass, Floss: Karen Foster, Tool: Cropadile, Other: various ribbons.

Design note: I just love these clear frames. There is so much you can do with them. Punching holes for your eyelets and brads are easy. Just let your imagination flow.

Spring Flower frame by Christa Parker. Supplies: Rub-ons: Die Cuts With a View, American Crafts, Deja View, Luxe Designs, Name sticker: It Takes Two, Plastic Flowers: American Crafts, Ribbon: Spring Narrows, Brads: Making Memories, Clear flower frame: Page Frame Designs.

Design note: I wanted to make a quick something to run over to a sick friend--one who has had one illness after another all this brutal winter.  A box of spring seemed like the perfect solution.  I covered a tin that was packaging for chipboard letters with half a sheet of paper, a few embellishments, tied on some bright ribbons, and filled it with seed packets for spring and summer flowers.  Project time:  15 minutes.

Grow by Dora Phillips. Supplies: Paper:  Daisy D's, Tin and Letters:  K & Company, Arrow:  Scenic Route, Other:  Ribbons and Buttons.
