Digital Discovery

  Lindsey Krauss

Wait until you meet our digital discovery this month. Come on over, grab a cup of tea at the drive-through and take a seat. I guarantee after meeting this gal, your heart will be as warmed as mine is.

It’s not every day we meet someone like Nanci Radford. She is a family woman like no other, the fact that jumps right off her pages – and then her biography! What a pleasure it is to showcase Nanci this month – her style is as versatile as her subjects. Her photographs literally span the generations, yet each photograph is scrapped with the same amount of love. Her color choice, her picture and embellishment placement, every detail you can tell is chosen purposely and with the intent of love. It’s so refreshing to find a scrapbooker who designs simply to love. Congratulations, Nanci, it was as much a pleasure to work with you as it is to admire your work.

Journaling: "Trick or Treat...Happy 1st Halloween...You don't even know what it is, but daddy and mommy dressed you up like a pumpkin (although "Wonder Aunt" Karen thought you looked like a carrot). I think I agree. You went to Uncle Larry's house to show him how cute you looked. I wish you could have come to my house. Mommy sent me this special picture. I think you must have really wanted a treat, so you ate a leaf. Mommy said you didn't like it!

Trick or Treat by Nanci Radford. Supplies: Autumn Flower Kit: Dana Zarling (recolored; Designer Digitals), Ribbon TUT: Linda Sattgast, Font: "1942 Report".

Design note: My favorite way to recolor a paper or element to match my photos is to use the color layer style. I begin by choosing a color from my photo using the color picker. I then create a new layer above the layer of the paper or element I wish to change. I CTRL + click in the icon of the paper/element layer to select it. Then I click on the new layer, choose a hard round brush and begin to color over it. Then I merge the two layers. If I want the color a little lighter, or a little darker, I use either the levels tool, or the saturation tool. It makes it so easy to get exactly the color I want. I made the ribbon and cardboard corner myself. For the ribbon I used a tutorial by Linda Sattgast. It was the first ribbon I ever did!

Snow Day by Nanci Radford. Supplies: Fonts: The Last Font I'm Wasting on You, Pristina.

Journaling: 15" of snow hit the weekend you & Max spent at Papa and Gramma's house. We made lots of memories; sledding, making snow angels and mini snowmen, freezing snowballs, decorating the Christmas Tree, watching traditional holiday movies, having breakfast with Santa, and helping at the Rotary Club Christmas Party. Mommy had a weekend alone because daddy was out of town, and we loved having you for the weekend.

Design note: This is one of the first layouts I ever did creating my own papers and elements. The paper was made using two shades of pink and the "render clouds filter". I made my own snowflake brush using the basic snowflake shape in PhotoShop2 and scattered them around the paper, then lightened the opacity. The frame is made using the elliptical marquee tool to make the basic shape, then using it again to cut out the center. I used the bevel and emboss tool to give it depth, then the gradient tool, the crosshatch filter, and the blur tool to give it the brushed metal finish. I made the snowflake ribbon myself using the snowflake brush on top of grosgrain ribbon. My skills have gotten so much better since I did this layout, but it's still one of my favorites. I guess it's the cute kids!

The Italy We'll Never Forget by Nanci Radford. Supplies: Paper: Rusty Pumpkin Patch by Julie Mead, World Traveler Brush Set by Michelle Coleman (Little Dreamer Designs), Other: created by Nanci Radford, Fonts: Cambridge, Hot Pizza.

Journaling: We began our final night in the city of la dolce vita strolling through the downtown piazzas with our first destination the famous Trevi Fountain. It is a massive backdrop for the Palazzo Poli, and its' enormity cannot be captured in a photo. The water at the bottom of the fountain represents the sea. Legend has it you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the water with your back to the fountain. We weren't taking any chances!

Design note: I learned so much creating my very first complete album in a "Create an Album in a Month" challenge. It captured the memories of the most incredible trip I've ever been on. I encourage anyone who wants to preserve memories of a special time to keep a journal so you have all the details when you make your album. I learned a lot about color and design flow by completing an album. I suggest you give it a try... you'll be glad you did. Another tip is to learn to use the dodge and burn tools in the tools pallet. You can create depth and give a lot of character to your layouts.

Journaling: 1946 – 2007 "Two people in love, and how that love grew..."

How Love Grew by Nanci Radford. Supplies: Paper and ribbons: Cafe Mocha Kit by Tracy Collins, Antique Key: Sentimental Journey Kit by Michelle Coleman.

Design note: This is a LO preserving the memories from a family picnic we had for my parents. The whole immediate family, with significant others, were together. Only my second daughter who lives out of town couldn't make it because she had just had a baby. So I added a photo of her family. The top photo is of my parents when they were dating. In this layout, I discovered tricks to use to restore old photos. The photo of my parents is 65 years old. There are many tools within PhotoShop2: levels, despeckle, the blur tool, and the clone tool, just to name a few, that will help you achieve this. I used the desaturate tool, and put a deckled edge on the other two photos to make them look like as if they were old too. Take the time to experiment with all your program has to offer.

About the designer

WOW...what can I say about me? I am the wife of one wonderful guy for the past 38 years. I've been blessed with four wonderful children, Rebecca, Staci, Brooke, and Adam...two amazing sons-in-law, David (Rebecca) and Terry (Staci)... two very special sort-of-in-laws, Clayton (Brooke) and Julie (Adam)...and three of the most precious grandchildren ever, Maxwell & Emma (David/Rebecca) and Forest (Terry/Staci). I live in the very most northern part of Illinois, 5 miles from the Wisconsin border. I work during the day as the coordinator of the Youth & Family Strengthening Department of behavior health agency...and I love it! Each day I work with teens and families, and do my best to make their lives better. Besides digital scrapbooking, I also enjoy cooking from scratch, gardening, traveling, and volunteering in my community.

I began traditional paper scrapping about 6 years ago to make memory books for my grandchildren. I didn’t like the mess it created, or the time it took to get organized and creative after a long day at work. In late 2006 I discovered Scrapper’s Guide, a website owned and operated by Linda Sattgast. I think of her as my teacher and mentor. Although I have always used my artistic skills and creativity as an outlet, I developed all my digital scrapping skills using her very unique teaching style. Digital scrapping is my “space” in this very busy and hectic world. I get so much support from my family and friends. Digital scrapping provides me a way to give back to my friends, family, and community in way that is uniquely my own. I am continuously working on scrapbooks for each of my grandchildren, and have made wedding albums for two friends, travel books for others, and numerous individual digitally created gifts for very special people in my life. My favorite work is the album I created to remember the trip my husband and I took to Italy with our very best friends. I journaled each and every day of the trip and added that journaling to my scrapbook pages to create a memory that we have looked back on many times. You can see one of the pages in the layouts here.

I want to thank the staff here at ScrapStreet Magazine for allowing me to share my talent and my work with other digital scrappers. I am humbled by the experience, as I have just begun to explore the possibility that others might learn from my work, or use my layouts to stir their creative juices. I also want to thank the following people for encouraging me to pursue this hobby: My wonderful family, my very dear friends David and Brooke for helping me choose which, of the 259 layouts I've done, to send to ScrapStreet, Linda Sattgast, & Susie & Laura from my digital scrap family. You are all the BEST!
