Bits-n-Bytes Junction

Sue Wood

Are you a font collector? Do you hoard all those lovely, creative fonts on your PC? Is your PC groaning at the seams because of all those fonts tucked away inside your Windows>Fonts folder? Do you sometimes lose a font and want to know where to find it? If so, then you are a font-a-holic just like me! So, this month’s Bits ‘n Bytes is reviewing another (and the best in my personal opinion), free font management system, Font Xplorer from Moon Software.

The great thing about this nifty piece of Software (apart from being free) is that it allows you to sort your fonts as you wish on your PC. No more installing fonts into your Windows>Fonts folder and slowing down your PC.

You can create folders by type of font, alphabetically, by theme or by author or font foundry. It is so simple to use once you navigate to your folders (even create them as you go) and you can see all the information about them including copyright stuff right in front of you. Just set up your font folders and away you go...

You can check which fonts are installed and which are not, load them up and be able to use them straight away in some applications that you have open (certainly in PS CS3) and unload them so they stay tidily in their folder. For those applications where you have to exit before being able to use the fonts, it is simple to get into the habit of deciding which fonts you want to use and load them prior to opening your application program. You can even type in your text within Font Xplorer to determine which fonts you want, then load them and open your application. Great when you have a handful of fonts you use again and again.

Character maps are also provided so you can see which characters are included. I hate choosing a font for my layouts only to discover there is no ? or ! for that font. You can zoom in on any character in the map to get a closer look. Hunt out duplicate fonts to see if you have downloaded some more than once. This is always a likelihood for me, as I have a couple of thousand fonts! You can even type in part of the font name and search through your folders for it, so you will never lose which folder you put it in.

There are options to sort and filter fonts and optionally mark those you wish to see; the possibilities are almost endless. So, may you know font happiness and management through your scrapbooking day.

See you next month for another review……
