Backyard Fun!

  Lori Burdeshaw

Remember when you were a kid and you could have so much fun just hanging out in your own back yard? When all it took was a little energy and a lot of imagination to turn an ordinary day into “the best day ever”? I sure remember those days. We had the neighborhood’s “cool yard” so there were always lots of neighborhood kids showing up to join in on the fun. What made it cool? It wasn’t anything fancy, just simple things like a sandbox and a picnic table on a concrete patio. We would spend hours playing “house” or some other “let’s pretend” game. We rode our bikes around the edges of the yard ‘til they made a nice permanent dirt path to follow. We played tag and hide & seek and all kinds of other games and went inside with an “awwwww… do we HAVE to?” at the end of the day.

I can’t speak for everyone else, but things are a lot different for my kids. They have so many other things to keep them entertained: video games, computers, and toys that have so many buttons, bells, and whistles that it takes two days just to figure them out. Playing outside just isn’t as enticing as it used to be. And not just to them, but to me too.

Design note:

This page uses basic color blocking. The addition of circles and black accents makes this layout really pop!

Spinning By Penny Brellenthin. Supplies: Paper: Prima, Cardstock: Prism, Thickers: American Crafts, Clips: 7Gypsies, Pen: Uni-Ball Signo, Scalloped Edge: Bazzill, Other: word beads, word strip.

Journaling: The world is spinning around and around. The colors are mixing and blending as the wind caresses your face. The simple joys of life are celebrated with laughter and exclamations of “Watch this Mommy!” You twist the swing’s rope until it can get no tighter and then let go. Everything twirls around you and it is fun! It’s amazing to see how much spinning you can do without getting dizzy or feeling sick. Nope, it’s just pure joy, childlike giggles and fun each and every time. This seems like another lesson for me to learn -- that happiness comes with the simplest of life’s pleasures.

Editor's note:

Heather's use of the squares on the bottom of the layout are a fun play on all the patterns she uses in the top part of her layout, tying it all together beautifully.

Backyard Picnic by  Heather Casper. Supplies: Paper: Die Cuts With A View, Other: buttons, ink, white glaze pen.

Design note:

To make the "star burst" under the photos I simply cut out star shapes from vellum and then went around the edge with white gel pen to make them stand out. I also drew a small line on all the leaves to make them stand out a bit more.

Just Hangin Around by Sherry Mendoza. Supplies: Paper: Reminisce, My Mind’s Eye, Cardstock: Bazzill, Gel Pen: Kikki K, Pen: Sharpie, Thickers: American Crafts, Alphabet stickers: Delish, Other: punches, buttons, ribbon, vellum, felt monkeys.
